How everRun Automated High Availability Works

everRun combines the resources of two physical servers to provide a completely redundant compute environment. All components including the storage and storage devices, networks, and even the servers are transparently paired for complete redundancy. Components are automatically activated should a failure occur to allow the application to compute through the failure without any interruption. You have the flexibility to host a single or multiple applications on the pair of redundant servers. Once protected, your XenApp environment is managed no differently than before everRun was running. There is still just a single XenApp environment to manage; no need to deploy or manage a ‘primary’ and ‘backup’ server, no changes or updates to your Web Interface or Licensing Server, and never any client-side changes to impose on your end-users.

everRun High Availability for Application Silos

Citrix best practice is to set up your applications in a “silo”. In the example below, a silo of SAP servers, CRM servers, and Microsoft Office servers have been configured in a ratio of one server per application. As more users demand access to these applications, additional servers are added and the cost of the deployment quickly grows. While your silo grows, your exposure and risk of application downtime also grows. everRun utilizes Citrix XenServer to consolidate required physical servers in your application silo, sometimes reducing a server deployment from 20 to only 5 or 6. Protecting those applications from downtime is the job of everRun. Each application on each virtual server is a candidate to be protected by everRun. You can assign and protect each application to a protection level that matches the criticality of that application and enables your service level agreements to be met.

everRun High Availability for XenApp plus Disaster Recovery

High availability isn’t always enough to meet legal, regulatory, or business requirements for system and data protection. Disaster Recovery ensures that your applications and data are available at a remote location, hundreds or thousands of miles away, in order to recover should a major disaster render your availability configuration inoperable; hurricane, tornado, etc. The following configuration provides a XenApp silo high availability protection using everRun to protect against the majority of failures and outages, with everRun DR providing remote replication and restart capabilities to a remote location. Critical XenApp infrastructure components have been protected to the same degree with everRun at both the production and DR sites to ensure a highly available environment should a restart be necessary at the DR site. This further protects your overall XenApp infrastructure and guards against falling short of SLAs due to a failed infrastructure component.
