everRun® Helps Europe's Largest Waste Management Company Stay Connected
THE COMPANY
As Berlin's principal waste collector, Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe (BSR) is Germany's largest municipal waste management company. About 6,600 BSR workers cruise the streets of Berlin--a city of 3.3 million--in over 2,000 vehicles, keeping 780,000 miles of streets clean and collecting 1.6 million tons of dirt and household waste per year. The organisation's main areas of responsibility include refuse logistics, waste treatment and the cleaning of large areas. With capital resources of 50 million Euros the BSR employs over 5,700 people.
THE SITUATION
As the largest waste management company for municipal waste in Europe BSR relies on the smooth running of their IT infrastructure. Standardised processes and procedures need to be in place. Additionally, unexpected events, such as sudden snow or black ice (which can hamper all communications channels that need to stay connected) can't affect the IT infrastructure, which needs to stay available.
BSR needed a high availability solution to ensure critical applications were always available.
THE SOLUTION
Prior to installation, a number of products were considered and evaluated. A key requirement for the new solution was that it worked with technologies and applications already in use at BSR, including Microsoft Exchange as the communications platform.
From the outset the everRun® products were seen to be ideal, as they offered an extremely simple installation process, completely functioning applications and high availability - without the need to make any changes to the applications it was protecting. Two everRun systems are now in use at BSR.
Any Windows application can be made available with everRun. The applications don't have to be "cluster aware" and no scripting for cluster or replication software is necessary. Based on standard Intel servers and standard Windows server software availability of up to 99,999 per cent can be achieved.
THE RESULTS
