What is Symmetric Multi-Processing?

Symmetric multi-processing (SMP) involves multiprocessor computer hardware architecture that provides fast performance by making multiple CPUs available to complete single processes at the same time. This architecture is set up where two or more identical processors are connected to a single shared memory and are controlled by a single operating system.

The advantage of symmetric multi-processing is that any processor can be assigned a task no matter where the data for that task is located. SMP systems can easily move tasks between processors to balance the workload efficiently. Also, additional CPUs can be added to improve performance and handle increased loads. There are a variety of operating systems and hardware arrangements that are able to support symmetric multi-processing. Just like any computer architecture you use, symmetric multi-processing also needs appropriate data protection.

Marathon Technologies provides data protection and ensures application availability for symmetric multi-processing through our everRun MX products. These software products ensure that your application are continuously running without any interruption and that your business continues to be productive even in the face of disaster.
